OCA Suggested Reading
The Photograph as Contemporary Art (2nd edition). Cotton,C
This book shows and illustrates eight different categories or themes of contemporary photographic art. It gave examples of artists work which I was then able to find more information about. (Not to mention some of the prices of out of print books.)
The Photographer's Eye. Freeman, M
Which came first... Chicken or the Egg? A book that compliments OCA Photography 1. If in any doubt with the course notes refer to this book for some guidance.
Light Science and Magic. An Introduction to Photographic Lighting (3rd edition). Hunter, F
Light Science and Magic. An Introduction to Photographic Lighting (3rd edition). Hunter, F
This book shows how diffuse reflection and direct reflection play their parts within photography. Plenty of diagrams of setups to control the effects of light within a basic scene.
Photography: A Critical Introduction. Wells, L
Another hard going book, I find myself reading the same page twice to understand the points made... often I cant find it.
The Genius of Photography. Badger, G.
Covering different styles of photography throughout the history of photography this book is an informative read, but with a very frustrating layout. Some of the text is in large bold print giving a general overview of the page. Some of the text is in bold giving information on the illustration sometimes going over the page and leaving you to turn back to read the main contents of the chapter.
It is worth reading, you just need to be patient with it.
The Nature of Photographs: A Primer. Shore, S.
An extremely quick read. I will read this again to make sure I understood it correctly.
This describes in depth what a photograph is.

The Photograph. Clarke, G
After a very slow start I have finally finished this book. It has a lot of information and has been padded out considerably with extensive use of the English language. Though often Clarke resorts to plain text when a subject that is easy to research is written about. Chapters that contain names of photographers that I had already read about were easier going than others.Websites to look at:

20th Century Photography, Museum Ludwig Cologne. Taschen
This is a great book with hundreds of photographs and information. The Photobook. Phaidon
The version that I have is the pocket book. The photographers in this book are in alphabetical order so that finding a photographer of choice is easy. The photographs are great, but the writing is so small. Don't try to read this on a bus. Not a lot of information is given about the photographers and only one picture per photographer too.
50 Photographers You Should Know. Prestel
I thought this was a great introduction to fifty photographers from 1815 to 1968. With a time line of the photographers life and a page of information about them it was enough to grab my attention. Also between two and four images accompanied each photographer.
LIFE, The first 50 Years 1936-1986
This is a book that should be constantly be picked up and looked at. I haven't read it word for word but I have looked through on a number of occasions. I has also helped my Son with some of his homework in history. He also found it a fascinating book. Not only is a record of historic events, it is also a record of how photography has changed and evolved over 50 years.
The Art of Photography. Barnbaum, B.
Within the Frame. duChemin, D.
This is a book that is written from the views and experiences of the author it is written in plain English and has a lot of usable information and tips. The images are beautifully colourful and the author explains his thought process behind most of them. Because the text is written as it may have been dictated it is easy to absorb all the information and learn from the experiences of D duChemin.
Chasing the Light. Perello, I.
A nice book that for a change doesn't want you to go and buy the latest equipment. The author explains his approach to different situations and his thought process. It gives plenty of examples and explanations of why the pictures were taken.
Chaptered in a logical order some of the subjects covered are aperture, shutter speed through to direct and indirect light and reflectors.

Own Choice Reading
Tulsa. Clark, L
Not to be left out for young people (children) to get there hands on.The Family of Man, The 30th Anniversary Edition. Steichen, E.
I love this book. There isn't a lot of text, but the photographs are inspiring. Worth every penny.
Camera Work the complete photographs. Stieglitz, A. (Taschen)
An interesting read about Stiegliz and images from his publication "Camera Works" but not enough to be inspiring for me. Defiantly worth a look though.
Karsh a Fifty Year Retrospective. Karsh, Y.
A fantastic book with photographs of traditional portraits, hand studies and some of his work on assignment.
If you get the chance to look at this book do so.
Nan Golding, The Compleat Pocket-sized Monograph. Costa, G.
A small pocket book briefly covering Nan Goldings life. Written by someone close to Nan this book shows how sad parts of her life was with the loss of so many friends.
Face of Our Time. Sander, A.
Quite a nice pocket book of formal portraits. This book has a short eight page introduction by Alfred Doblin. In it he explains his view on the types of faces in portraiture and the photographers. This is followed by sixty of Sander's photographs with titles. A Biographical Sketch can be found towards the rear of the book.
Lewis Hine. Phaidon 55
A great pocket book covering his work from 1905 and with the National Child Labor Committee (1906) to his work with the National Research Project (1937). A lot of information is given in a readable format in this book, it is a useful book for gaining background knowledge on Hine.
Kids At Work, Lewis Hine and His Crusade Against Child Labor. Freedman, R.
An informative book of Hine's life. This book has a lot of photographs in. Great to show to children...
Masters of Photography, classic photographic artists of our time. Golden, R
By the time I finished this book I had ordered another 4 books. A great pocket book. Smaller than "50 Photographers You should know", similar layout as "50 Photographers You should know"... but cover many more photographers. Mostly three of the photographers images are accompanied by information.
blurbook. Postle, P / Ross, A.
blur 1994-95. With 13% extra free what more could you ask for? Plenty of ideas in this book. Love the black and white images. In the Blink of and Eye. Brackenbury, J.
Photos of events that are normally too fast for the human eye to capture. An interesting read and one that my son found fascinating. When we have time we will have a play and try emulating some of the images for fun.
The Illustrated Practical Guide to Digital and Classic Photography. Luck, S & Freeman, J.
A very useful book that covers photography in many situations, light, composition, viewpoint etc... This book also shows many different techniques and ideas.
Digital Photography Masterclass. Ang, T.
This book is can be split into two parts... It concentrates mainly on "Image Analysis" and "Post Production". It has many exercises to try similar to the exercises of "OCA Photography 1".
Micheal Freemans Photo School: Light and Lighting
Quiet a quick read and one that I am glad to have found while working on TAOP Light. It covers different aspects of light, temperature, angle, shadows and gives information on metering. It also shows examples from students profiled in the first chapter with the thoughts of Michael Freeman alongside.
